October 28, 2025How Often Should You Feed Your Pet? (and Other FAQs)

Knowing exactly how often to feed your pet (and what, when, and how much) can be surprisingly confusing.

As lifelong pet parents and part of the All Things Pawsome family, we’ve seen it all: the overfeeders, the underfeeders, the “but he looked hungry again” feeders.

So today, we’re setting the record straight with some real, South African-friendly advice for keeping your furry friends happy, healthy, and well-fe

How Often Should You Feed Your Dog?

This one depends on your dog’s age, size, and lifestyle. Puppies are like toddlers; they need frequent small meals to keep up with their wild energy and rapid growth. And adult dogs do far better when they are fed consistently.

A general feeding guide would look like:

  • Puppies: 3–4 meals per day
  • Adults: 2 meals per day
  • Seniors: 1–2 smaller meals per day, depending on appetite and activity

Feeding once a day might sound convenient, but it can actually make digestion tougher for some dogs and lead to hunger-related anxiety (and the dreaded bin raids). Splitting meals keeps their metabolism steady and their moods sweet.

“Free feeding”, leaving food out all day, might seem kind, but it can cause overeating and obesity, especially in smaller breeds. Plus, in South Africa’s warmer climates, food spoils faster, which can lead to tummy trouble.

What About Cats?

Ah, the feline overlords. Cats are natural grazers, so they often prefer small, frequent meals throughout the day rather than two big ones. But let’s not confuse “nibbling” with “never-ending buffet.”

The best feeding rhythm for cats looks like:

  • Kittens: 3–4 meals daily
  • Adults: 2–3 meals, with portion control
  • Senior cats: Smaller, softer meals to suit slower digestion

Cats are masters at convincing us they’re starving, even five minutes after breakfast. Stick to measured portions, and don’t fall for the “feed me now” opera performance.

Keep your cat’s feeding area quiet and away from noisy appliances or dogs. Cats love calm dining; it’s part of their regal nature.

Wet vs. Dry Food: Does It Matter?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer, and it really depends on your pet’s health and lifestyle.

  • Dry food (kibble) helps clean teeth and is easier to store, making it ideal for most dogs and cats.
  • Wet food adds hydration and is gentler on sensitive tummies and perfect for picky eaters or older pets.
  • Combination feeding (a mix of both) is a great middle ground for variety and balance.
  • Always check the label for high-quality ingredients. Meat should come first, not “animal derivatives.”

At All Things Pawsome, we’re big on products that list clear, wholesome ingredients you can actually pronounce.

How Much Should You Feed Your Pet?

This one’s tricky, because calorie needs vary wildly between the breeds. A laid-back Bulldog doesn’t need as much as a Border Collie, who spends her day herding imaginary sheep in the garden.

To get an idea about how much to feed your pet, check the packaging’s feeding guide, but use it as a starting point, not gospel. Adjust according to your pet’s body condition:

Ribs should be felt, not seen.

A waistline should be visible, but not dramatic.
